Objectives of the Course
Introductions
Safety
Objective and expectations
Test level of knowledge of the Judoka, may need to adjust program to meet their needs.
How to measure understanding.
Terminal behavior.  Review at regular intervals
Demonstrate Harai Goshi
In circular, forward and backward action
Linear and Circular
Which in terms of power is better? Linear or Circular

Gripping
Grip
Need to consider 'right v right' and 'right v left'
Lapel
Provides poor control of Uke body. Difficult to do bi-lateral techniques.
Shoulder
Uke can counter also poor use of arm.  However good control of Uke head
Deep Shoulder
Good for jigotai but can be countered
Under Arm
Difficult to obtain, but very powerful, can also be used to break Uke balance when he moves his arm.
Same Side
Becomes Yama Ashi (Mountain Storm)
Apex of the Shoulder
Good control of Uke body, good use of the arm situated on the shoulder, provided additional power.  Good for combinations techniques
Static Throw
Need to overcome inertia of Uke body. Thus more suitable for big or strong players.
Kuzushi very important, but the movement should be small; otherwise it will work against you.

Key Points:

  • Good Kuzushi
  • The hands of Tori should be level.
  • The balancing leg of Tori should form an equilateral triangle with Ukeís feet.
  • The hip of Tori should fit into the join between the upper leg and abdomen.
  • The action of the sweeping leg should just brush Ukeís leg and guide Ukeís body over. The power is generated in the stomach.
  • The action of Tori should be circular
Demonstrate Static throw
Technique performed with Uke;

  • Left leg retreating
  • Right leg retreating
  • Right level advancing
  • Left leg advancing
  • Causing Uke to rotate about Tori body
This will provide more difficult and more time should be allowed

Judoka to practice the throw focusing on the key points.  Allow time and review

Dynamic Throw
Applies the principles of Ju. Tsukuri more important than Kuzushi. The rotational movement of Tori will cause the instability of Uke i.e. Breaking the  balance:

  • Move in the same direction as Uke
  • The turning and fitting action of Tori will de-stabilize; control Uke (Break balance).
  • Tsukuri more important than Kuzushi
Demonstrate Dynamic throw
Combinations
Note will only go into this part should the Judoka successfully perform Static and Dynamic Harai Goshi
This will involve moving from left to right or right to left.  Example right handed Harai Goshi to left handed Sasae Tsuri Komi Ashi:

  • Harai Goshi (R) to Sasae Tsuri Komi Ashi (L)
  • Harai Goshi (R) to Ko Soto Gari or De ashi Bari (L)
  • O Uchi Gari to Harai Goshi
  • O Soto Gari to Harai Goshi or vice versa
Counters
  • Harai Gaeshi
  • Tani Otoshi
  • Tai Guruma
  • Utsuri goshi
  • Ushiro Goshi
Review

Review at this point and ensure that all Judoka can execute Harai Goshi while on the move.  The course should not move forward until this objective has been met.

Juji Gatame
Key Points:

  • Position of Tori body
  • Placement of Uke arm
  • Standard method v Shiai method
  • Breaking Uke grip, 4/5 methods
  • Entry into Juji Gatame
  • Counters 3 types
  • Combination: Kami Shiho Gatame, Kata ha Jime, Sangaku jime, arm crush
  • From a standing position
Review
  • Review any issues Judoka have with techniques cover over the day.
  • Review whether Objectives have been met
  • Feedback from Judoka
