A team of seven from our club visited Leicester on a unseasonaly warm Saturday to compete in the Southfields Judo Club Championships. This club is highly regarded BJC club and this competition attracts entrants from all over the country.
We came away with one Gold, two Silver and four Bronze.
Below are videos of some of the contests, both wins and losses. They are worth studying to see what works well and what does not. Particular attention to the times we lost and the lessons that can be learned from them will pay dividends in the long run.

Fairoze
The opponent in this contest exhibits a strange stance that looks akin to a preying mantis. As this is not Kung Fu, he may be confused as to which martial art he is engaged in. Fairoze repeatedly throws this opponent but each time the opponent manages to land on his front and therefore there is no score. As a result of all this frenetic activity both contestants are getting tired.
At one point Fairoze puts his arm around the neck of his opponent and the opponent collapses to the floor. It is not clear how this happens and as no Shido is awarded against Fairoze, it is reasonable to assume that he has not infringed the rules. The medic is seen examining the opponent who a short while later is on his feet without any apparent problem. Maybe he was just trying to buy himself some breathing space. But this works for both contestants. At this juncture, Fairoze is up by one Yuko.
The continue their contest with a lot of energy spent in further not terribly effective technique. We then see Fairoze grab his opponent but are unable to see the technique as the camera is not pointing in the right direction. This is very annoying as the scoreboard now shows an Ippon to Fairoze. Full marks for Fairoze. Nothing for the camera person.
Fairoze
Fairoze
In this contest Fairoze takes far to big a step in trying to get to his opponent, who if more skilled would have immediately taken advantage of this. Fairoze is also using far to much energy in his enthusiasm for this contest and is at risk of generating lactic acid which will prevent him from continuing if he is not careful.
This video is not helped by the camera person deciding that it would be amusing to film sideways. They have been spoken to and it should not happen again.
Fairoze's opponent is clearly in favour of the drop knee Seoi Nage techniques. Fairoze is doing a good job of resisting these but is caught for Wazari at one point. During a very active contest by both participants Fairoze is taken for another drop knee technique which scores Ippon. It is clear at this point that Fairoze is exhausted and is upon the Rei close to collapse. He must learn to control his energy!

Jessica v Laura
In this closely matched contest Laura is slightly dominant in the early stages but later on Jessica attempts a Sode Tsuri Komi Goshi that doesn't quite come off but in the resultant scramble on the ground Jessica manages to achieve a hold and as result, the clock starts counting. Laura seems unable to escape despite her best efforts and Jessica wins the Gold in this championship with Laura gaining Silver.
Jessica v Laura
Jonathan
Jonathon is clearly on a mission in this contest. His Sensei wishes he competed like this all the time. Very early ion he scores Wazari with an O Soto Gari and goes straight into a hold down. After a few seconds the referee indicates Toketa (broken hold) and brings them to standing. This would be if the contestants have moved off the contest area. From the camera view it appears that there was part of one of their bodies always in contact with the red area so this decision would be incorrect. But one must remember that the referees view is different and that he must make his decision as he sees fit. Upon restarting Jonathon attacks again with O Soto Gari this time scoring Yuko. Once again he has the opponent in a hold down but they are well within the contest area and there is no escape. This contest was all Jonathon.
Jonathan
Molly
Molly attacks very well in this contest with a Uchi Mata which unfortunatly does not come off as a result of a lack of committment on Molly's part. On the ground she does not do very well and is very defensive. Molly does keep on attacking but the throws are not coming off in this contest. On the ground the opponent gets Molly in a hold and this lasts the duration with an unfortunate loss to Molly in this contest.
Molly
Molly
Early on in this contest Molly is thrown but it does not count for scoring as Molly lands sufficiently on her front. However, upon restarting, Molly appears to fall down and is immediately placed in a hold. Molly is unable to escape and this contest is lost as the clock gets to 25 seconds.
Molly
Molly v Shona
These two contestants have worked at Judo together for several years and therefore have a good knowledge of how each of them like to fight. Shona is trying hard to pull of her O Soto Gari whilst Molly wants her Uchi Mata or Tai Otoshi. These throws are not working for either of them mostly because they both know what to expect. Molly is strangely trying to hang on to Shona whenever Shona is trying to get up. The very loud 'advice' that can be heard on the soundtrack is not for this contest but for the next mat. As the contest comes to an end there is still no score and the decision is given to Molly.
Molly v Shona
Shona
Displaying far more aggression than in her other contests at this competition, she is having a very good go. Her opponent is trying hard to fight over the grip with Shona but she is resisting this very well. After a while Shona is taking down with a poor throw where Shona lands on her front. She is put in a hold but the contestants are clearly both off the contest area and this does not count.
Upon restarting Shona manages some sort of throw (unfortunately off screen) but is unable to complete it on the ground. The opponent then tries an Uchi Mata which fails but upon the ground Shona finds herself in a hold from which she is unable to escape.
Shona
Shona
Shona doesn't seem to really have her heart in the matter. Her grip is poor and her stance is not strong so that she is easily pulled of balance. Her opponent doesn't manage a throw but more of a 'fall down' with Shona. At this point Shona is placed in a hold and is held which is rare. Once can see that she does have the strength to escape but seems to have forgotten the techniques required to achieve it. This is not her day.
